Some interesting trivia about dinosaurs

The word 'dinosaur' means 'terrible lizard'

The name “dinosaur”  comes from the Greek deinos (terrible) and sauros (lizard). Yet dinosaurs are not true lizards; they belong to a separate group of reptiles. English anatomist Richard Owen launched the term ' Dinosauria' in 1842.

Long history

The first dinosaurs appeared about 251.9 million years ago, during the Triassic (then the Earth consisted of one continent, which is now called “Pangea.

Many new species appeared during the Jurassic ( 201.3 million years ago).

The dinosaurs became extinct 66 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period. So they lived for a period of 165 million years (for comparison; modern humans have only existed for about 300,000 years).

The largest and smallest dinosaurs

Dinosaurs varied greatly in appearance and behavior. Some had horns, crests or armored skins, like the Triceratops and Ankylosaurus , while others had long necks so they could eat leaves from tall trees, like the Brachiosaurus. They also differed greatly in length and weight. Although species such as Argentinosaurus could reach 30 meters in length, many dinosaurs were small. The Microraptor, for example, was only the size of a crow.

Birds descended from dinosaurs

It is an undisputed fact that birds belong to the group of Archosauria, which also includes crocodiles, dinosaurs and perhaps pterosaurs. The most common current theory seeks the birds' direct ancestors among the smaller carnivorous theropod dinosaurs. In fact, according to scientific research, our cackling chickens are thought to be the closest relatives of Titanosaurus Rex, the largest carnivorous theropod (a two-legged carnivorous dinosaur that could grow 12 to 13 meters long and weighed between 4 and 8 tons)! Less surprisingly, crocodiles and turtles also descended from dinosaurs.

Some dinosaurs had colorful feathers

It was long thought that all dinosaurs had scales, like several current reptiles. But recent research indicates that some dinosaurs had colorful plumes. However, no one knows exactly what dinosaurs looked like, as one can only rely on pieces of found skeletons and some paw prints.
