The Roswell Incident

The Roswell Incident was big news in the United States through various media (newspapers and radio stations) on July 8, 1947. Reports of an alleged crash of a flying saucer near Roswell is known to ufologists as the most significant UFO incident ever.

In July 1947, a remarkable event allegedly occurred on a farm near Roswell. Its report made world news for a short time. Indeed, the Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF) press office declared in an official press release that a crashed flying saucer, a UFO, had been recovered (RAAF captures Flying Saucer, several American newspapers reported). A day later a new communiqué came out talking about a crashed weather balloon. After that, there was silence for more than thirty years.

It wasn't until 1978 that the Roswell incident returned to the news when noted Canadian UFO researcher Stanton T. Friedman got in touch with former Major Jesse Marcel. Marcel was involved in the 1947 recovery of the remains of what the Air Force called a weather balloon. As an off-duty major, Marcel stated to Friedman in 1978, it had not been a weather balloon, but rather an alien spacecraft. Friedman found dozens more witnesses in Roswell, including even a general, who confirmed Marcel's reading. Friedman wrote a book after which more witnesses came forward and dozens more books were published.
